How Ezra Describes His Journey... And Why It Matters
Becoming a wicketkeeper can be intimidating and if you’re anything like me, and were thrown the gloves by a coach, expecting to keep wicket, having never played in the position before, it can be frustrating to find out where to start.
When I first picked up the gloves I wanted to learn how to become a wicketkeeper but had no experience and no clue where to start.
You may be wondering:
- What equipment do I need?
- What kind of exercises do I need to do to improve my game?
- How do I prevent making a fool of myself in a game?
- And most importantly, how do I learn the necessary skills to be the best wicketkeeper I can be?
When I first started, I was 11 years old and about to make my debut for my province. I was a bowler and a batsman (allrounder).
On the morning of our first match, our coach told us that our wicketkeeper won’t be joining us on tour.
A debate broke out amongst the team on who should be the keeper.
Because I was the best fielder the coach threw the gloves to me.
I was livid because I loved bowling and I had the same fear all the other kids had.
Scared of making mistakes and a fool of myself in a position that was difficult to say the least.
I made a lot of mistakes in my first game, but I did well enough to gain selection as the wicketkeeper for the whole tour.
To be honest, I was playing on instinct.
I was improvising because I had no idea how to perform the role.
The worst part about it was that I had no guidance to help me identify my errors.
Remembering my performances from game-to-game became important.
I attempted to rectify my own mistakes.
Coaches teach you how to bat, bowl and field.
There is not enough focus on wicketkeeping – the busiest position on the cricket field!
I had to gather the information I learnt by watching wicketkeepers on TV and tried to copy what I saw.
As my wicketkeeping career progressed I found myself picking up nasty habits.
It was only years later that I realised the importance of having the correct technique, when I tried to dive to catch a ball and landed on my shoulder and injured it.
I made changes to my technique to prevent this from happening again.
It went on like this throughout my career.
As I reached the end of my playing career, I realised that there has to be a way I can help other wicketkeepers.
The aim would be to develop and master their craft, and prevent themselves from making the same mistakes I did.
I became a coach and the more I worked with wicketkeepers from around the country.
I realised that a lot of the sessions involved me rectifying the bad habitsThey picked up over years because of a lack of coaching.
While working with a junior national player (who never played in the role before) I had an epiphany:
- I can help aspiring wicketkeepers learn the correct basics from the start.
- I can help those aspiring to become the next Quinton de Kock, Kyle Verreynne Faye Tunnicliffe.
- I can prevent bad habits from the start
So I designed a course that will provide exactly that...
A course with drills, techniques and exercises that you can access anywhere in the world.
Let me ask you...
- How much would it cost to have a personal coach working with you?
- How much time and effort would it take for you to figure out how to do this properly?
- How much would your bad habits eventually cost you, if you don't work on them now?
This could cost you thousands of Rands and Thousands of Hours.
But because of the Power of Digital and Online Methods, you can get awesome results much cheaper and with much less time.
